End-to-end encryption ensures that only you and the person you’re chatting with can read what is sent — not even WhatsApp or Meta (its parent company) can access it. This encryption applies to messages, calls, photos, videos, voice notes, documents, and even status updates.
When you send a message, it is secured with a unique lock using a cryptographic key. Only the recipient has the special key to unlock and read it. These keys are stored only on user devices — not on servers.
In 2021, WhatsApp extended this protection to whatsapp number database backups as well. Now, you can enable encrypted cloud backups stored in Google Drive or iCloud. This adds another layer of protection, ensuring that even if someone accesses your cloud account, they can’t read your chat data without the encryption key.
You can manage encryption settings in WhatsApp under Settings > Chats > Chat Backup > End-to-end Encrypted Backup.
Encryption also protects voice and video calls, meaning your conversations cannot be intercepted. WhatsApp uses the Signal encryption protocol, one of the most secure standards available today.
