In the case of most postgraduate qualifications, you can go straight from a first degree to a postgraduate course. Although it's not exactly impossible to do an MBA this way, it's certainly undesirable.

The association's Salary and Careers Survey shows that around 80 per cent of MBA students studying part-time or full-time have a first degree and have achieved a first or upper second class. So a good first degree is ideal.

Applicants usually also have to take a common admissions test, and one criterion for how selective different schools are is how high a GMAT score they expect to receive from applicants. The GMAT includes tests of numeracy, literacy, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Non-English speaking applicants also have to take an English language test.

Most, but not all, business schools have their academic year start in September or October. Although the application deadline is usually April/May, it is advisable to submit your application at the beginning of the calendar year you wish to begin studying. Part-time and distance learning MBAs usually start in January, so
