What is a Michelin star?
Michelin stars are awarded only to the best establishments in the world, which are eligible for one to three stars. To earn one Michelin star, the restaurant must be "a very good restaurant in its category." To earn two stars, it must offer "excellent cuisine, [and] worth a detour," and to receive three stars, the restaurant must serve "exceptional cuisine, [and] worth the trip."
History of the Michelin star
According to the Michelin website , the Michelin Guide was originally intended to encourage motorists to discover France and, of course, to buy more Michelin tires. This little red guide was initially free, until its re-publication in 1920, at a cost of seven francs. It featured hotels and restaurants, categorized. The Michelin star system, from zero to three stars, was introduced in 1931.
The Michelin Guide now covers 30 territories on three continents. Michelin inspectors are experienced food and beverage professionals who visit and inspect restaurants anonymously, meaning that the restaurants in question do not know when the inspections are carried out to award them a Michelin star. In addition, the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards were established in 1991 and recognize outstanding chefs, restaurants, restaurant designs, etc. in the United States. Wine Spectator recognizes restaurants with exceptional wine lists in three categories: the Award of Excellence , the Best of Award of Excellence , and the Grand Award .
